Introduction

As discussed in  a technical paper on this site, Georeference Online Ltd believes that geological standards which are both person-friendly and machine-friendly will assume increasing importance in geology.

Adherence to broadly accepted geological nomenclature and GIS standards by exploration and mining companies will enhance the value of the data sets they hold  -  data sets which are often an important component of corporate intellectual capital.

This page is used to highlight standards of practice and nomenclature which assist in geological work in general, and in the development of private, corporate and public data-based assets in particular.

Rock Classification System

The British Geological Survey provide a rock classification system which fulfills the criteria discussed above at the following site: http://www.bgs.ac.uk/bgsrcs/

Geological Wordlists

The Australian Geological Survey Organisation (AGSO) provide a number of useful wordlists at the following site:   http://www.ga.gov.au/oracle/

Exploration Best Practice Guidelines

The Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum provide useful, if abbreviated, guidelines for exploration best practice on pages 24 to 26 of the following site: http://www.cim.org/definitions/cimdef1.pdf .
